Let’s talk about airport security

If this latest terrorist attack on a Delta plane does not point out how futile our TSA is, nothing will.  At some point, the administration and its bureaucrats must wake up to the fact that the only way to have any security in the air is to stop the prospective terrorists before they get to the airport.   We apparently have a 500,000 name “Watch List”.    Apparently, they do just watch it, not use it.  How difficult can it be to cross check against this list?   Anyone on this list should not even be allowed  into an airport until they have been checked out and removed from the list.   Airline travel is not a constitutional right as far as I know, so why not spend the hundreds of billions of dollars we are spending putting all travelers through a nonsensical “security check”, while allowing those on the Watch List to get on a plane.

Why is there not a division in the Homeland Security Department dedicated to checking out these people?   If one’s name appears on the list, there is a reason for it.   This can be checked out personally by an investigator, families can be interviewed, questions can be asked.  Reasons for travel to such garden spots known to support terrorists as Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia etc. must be given and checked out as well as the source of the funds used to buy the tickets.   We must have bureaucrats able to make a value judgment and be held responsible for said decision.    At the present time, it seems as if there are many people shuffling paper and no-one putting it together.  Frankly, if a father goes so far as to warn a  foreign government that his own son is a threat to them, someone better pay attention.   Instead, we have the asinine comment from our Director of Homeland Security that this “does not raise to the level of concern”.   If this doesn’t, what does?    Pathetic.

The Fort Hood terrorist also gave out a plethora of warnings about his attitudes and intentions by communicating with known terrorists, which were all ignored by those in the know as being “research”.    So far, this teachable moment has taught them nothing.

We suffer from a surfeit of political correctness which will not allow us to profile anything.  This beggars common sense.   Perhaps we should all fly El Al in the future.   The Israelis know how to run a secure airline – at this rate, we never will.

Is this the change you hoped for?

Having just watched Obama say nothing over the Iran situation, I am struck by how pathetic his pontificating came off.   This could be a great opportunity to encourage more freedom in Iran, instead,  Obama seems unable to criticize what is obviously a fraudulent election and unable to support change in that country in any way at all.   What a fraud he is!!   Worse yet, he plans to legitimize the dictatorship by “negotiating” with them.   You can’t negotiate with dictators and frankly, this country should not even try.   I am afraid Obama is one of those types who talks a good line but  is paralyzed by fear when it comes to actually doing something.   Too bad for Iran and too bad for us too.

Government money – now there’s an oxymoron!

If we believe that language is mostly how we as humans commnicate with each other, I would like to suggest that we all start describing things correctly.  I am bemused to hear many acquaintances, journalists and talking heads referring to government money for one thing or another.   Let’s be clear.   Government has no money.  It produces nothing, builds nothing, sells nothing, brokers nothing.  What is does  is tax everyone,  take that taxpayer money, support its own activities handsomely in the form of pensions, offices and salaries, not to mention lavish expenses, and then return what’s left to the taxpayer.   It can also print money by selling bonds. This just an IOU from future taxpayers – paid back in deflated dollars by taxpayers, their children or grandchildren.   Let’s start calling things by their correct names, i.e. taxpayer money, taxpayer stimulus, taxpayer paid health care, taxpayer paid job saving/creating plan, taxpayer TARP bailout program, taxpayer TALF bailout plan, taxpayer subsidies for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, taxpayer auto bailout.   Well, you get the picture.  Perhaps it would bring some clarity to the debate over our economy, something our government collectively does not wish to allow, hence the semantics.   And for those of us fortunate, or unfortunate enough not to pay federal or state income taxes, don’t think you pay no taxes.  If you like to take showers, look at your water bill – tax, tax, fee, fee.  Turn on your lights or A/C, look at your electricity bill, tax, tax, fee, fee.  Need to make a phone call, tax, tax, fee, fee.   Drive a car?  Tax,tax, fee, fee.  There is very little in this life that one can do that is not taxed.   So we all pay, some more than others.    Just pay attention and demand linguistic accuracy from those misrepresenting who pays – or translate it yourself.   We’ll all be better off as a result.
